Coconut(নারকেল) - Cocos nucifera

ডাবের পানি আমার খুব পছন্দের একটা জিনিস... একটা সময় ছিল যখন যারা আমার সাথে ভ্রমন করতে যেত, আমি তাদের সবার জন্য আনলিমিটেড ডাব অফার করতাম... এখন টাকা পয়সার টান পরাতে সেই অফার তা আর দেই না... যাই হউক, আজকে নারকেল নিয়ে লেখতে বসলাম... ডাবের মিষ্টি পানি, নারকেলের পিঠা, নারকেলের আশ দিয়ে কয়ের বানানো, নারকেল তেল, কত কিছুই তো হয়... যখন খুলনায় ছিলাম তখন অনেক নারকেল তেলের ফাক্টরী দেখেছি... নারকেলের রস নিংড়ে নেয়ার পরে যে ছোবড়া থাকতো, তা নিয়ে যেত আইসক্রিমওলারা, যা আমরা ছোট বেলায় ১ বা দুই টাকা দিয়ে কিনতাম...

Coconut trees at the shore of St Martin's Island

Possibly coconut is the best natural source(except water) to slack the thirst of a pedestrian during hot summer. Botanical name of this fruit is Cocos nucifera from the family Arecaceae (palm family). In Bangladesh we call this narkel(নারকেল), narikel(নারিকেল), etc when ripe, and dab(ডাব) when it is green. This grows widely at the southern portion of our country.



Coconut is a tall single stemmed plant. A coconut tree can bring several hundreds of fruits per year. Fruits are having three layers. Husk, the outermost layer can be used to make coir and other products. Another layer is the hard shell. Inside the shell the flesh of the coconut resides with fresh water. The green coconut doesn't have any flesh inside. Coconut oil produces from the flesh by squeezing and grinding at machine.



Coconut flower is an inflorescence. As it is at the top of a long tree, most of the time we don't get the chance to observe this flower closely. The plant has both male and female flower. In Kerala, it is must to present the coconut flower during marriage ceremony.



Being a tall tree, it is hard to capture the picture of a coconut flower. The photos of this article were taken(January 2012) from St Martin's Island of Bangladesh, AKA Narkel Jinjira(নারকেল জিঞ্জিরা) which means The Island of Coconut
