Leisure and Entertainment at Dhanmondi Lake
Located in the middle of Dhaka city,
within the prosperous Dhanmondi residential area, Dhanmondi Lake is a
popular tourist attraction, with lush green vegetation, a lakeside
walkway and benches for visitors to sit and relax on. Some residences of
Dhanmondi are built on the water's edge, with one of the most
interesting being a house in the shape of a boat. This well-known
landmark in the area seems appropriate seeing as Dhanmondi Lake is used
extensively for boating. The open-air amphitheater, Rabindra-Sarobar, is
also located on the banks of Dhanmondi Lake and is the venue for
concerts, dramas, theater performances and a variety of cultural
programs, festivals and holiday celebrations.
It has been traditionally recognized as an up market,
affluent residential area. Previously Dhanmondi was more of a quiet
location but recently it has become a very busy area with many shopping
malls, plazas, banks, restaurants, hospitals, educational institutions
as well as art galleries.
This is a place where you will find almost everything for a regular
life and one of its most attractive parts is the lake that flows
in-between various points of Dhanmondi. This lake is also named
accordingly as the Dhanmondi Lake.
The lake was originally a dead channel of the Karwan Bazar River, and
was connected to the Turag River. The lake is now partially connected
with the Begunbari Canal.
Almost 16% of the total area of Dhanmondi was conserved for
the lake. Dhanmondi Lake is a well visited spot where many interesting
activities and events takes place on a regular mode. The lake comes with
different looks and beauty in different seasons. There are
many trees around this lake blossoming with various strokes of colors
such as red, orange, pink, yellow, white and purple. On a hot summer
like this a walk beside the lake can be very relaxing and enchanting to
pass the leisure times. People tend to visit the lake during the evening
sunlight as it gets comforting and air becomes cooler with soft
breezes.
As an important fact in the history of the country, the home of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,
the founding father of Bangladesh, was in Dhanmondi, and it was there
that he and most of his family were assassinated in 1975.
From a social point of view, Dhanmondi Lake is extremely popular as
an entertainment venue, particularly during festivals such as
Independence Day, Eid and Pohela Baishakh – Bengali New Year. At these
times, crowds flock to Dhanmondi and the atmosphere is very festive in
this vibrant neighborhood of Dhaka City.
